If Lynd Ward pioneered the American graphic novel, it was left to more commercially minded creators to concoct the floppy, staple-bound items that would become known as “comic books.”

They began as an offshoot of the comic-strip boom in the late 1920s/early 1930s, when the comics section in newspapers.
